K. Teradaira - Niibori Guitar

This is yet another fascinating branch of the Yamaki family tree. Being decades in the past, we’ll probably never know how or why these guitars came to be.

K. Teradaira

K. Teradaira is Kazuyuki Teradaira, one of the original founders of Yamaki Guitars.

Yamaki Gakki Co., LTD.

One thing that is interesting is the legal name on the label: “Yamaki Gakki Co., LTD.” That differs from what we have seen on other Yamaki models and literature: “Yamaki Musical Instruments Co., LTD.” The label on these instruments also says “Anño 1983” (though the serial numbers would indicate a 1982 build). Is “Anño 1983” supposed to represent the year the guitar was made or the year “Yamaki Gakki Co., LTD” was founded?

Why did Kazuyuki Teradaira use a different business entity rather than the established Yamaki Musical Instruments Co., LTD.? Was he branching out on his own? Questions with no answers.

Niibori Guitar

To start, we’re not going to claim to be experts on Niibori Guitar. It looks to be a classical orchestral guitar method created by Hiroki Niibori that is still taught today, and also defines tunings and names for different sizes of guitars. Searching the internet, it appears that there were multiple luthiers making classical guitars for Niibori (see the gallery below). In the models below by K. Teradaira we see a 303P and 505P. If we use this picture as a reference, S = Soprano, A = Alto, P = Prime, B = Bass, CB = Contrabass.
